Wines with Denomination of Origin

01 DIC 2012

Rioja is a qualified denomination of origin (DOCa) from Spain awarded to certain wines mainly produced in areas of the autonomous regions of La Rioja and the Basque Country, and, to a lesser extent, in areas of Navarre and Castille and Leon. There are three production subzones due to their orographic and climatic diversity – Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa – where wines with different characteristics are produced. The yearly average production of the Rioja wine is 250 million of litres (85% red wine and 15% white and rosé wine). Rioja wines are fresh, aromatic, with a balanced composition and excellent bouquet.

Ribera del Duero is a denomination of origin including vineyards located in Castille and Leon (Spain), within a strip of the River Duero basin of about 115-kilometre long and 35-kilometre wide, in the junction between the provinces of Soria (19 municipalities), Burgos (60), Segovia (4) and Valladolid (19). It approximately begins at San Esteban de Gormaz in the East and reaches up to Quintanilla de Onésimo in the West. At the end of 2005, harvest in the area was approximately 2% of all the extension aimed at wine growing in Spain. It comprises a registered vineyard surface of 20,956 Ha and has 8,331 active vine growers (year 2009).
